Buy wool rugs online

If you are looking for a high-quality rug, modern wool rugs are a good choice. Wool has been used extensively for centuries - it is considered the oldest fibre material used by humans. Wool, which is classically obtained from sheep, is particularly sustainable due to the regrowth of the animal's fur. In the meantime, however, other animals are also used for wool production, such as the cashmere goat for cashmere wool or the angora goat, from whose fur mohair is made. Wool sheared directly from live sheep is called virgin wool and is considered to be of particularly high quality and freshness. Although scientific progress has led to the development of numerous synthetic fibres, wool remains a frequently used and popular raw material in home furnishings. This is also true for the production of wool rugs in modern shapes and colours. There are various reasons for this.

FAQ about wool rugs

Why a wool rug?

Wool rugs are extremely robust, keep their shape and serve as thermal insulation. Due to its loose structure, wool can store moisture and also heat and thus contributes to a pleasant indoor climate. Accordingly, wool rugs are suitable against the cold in general and not only ensure warm feet during the cold season. At the same time, wool, unlike synthetic fibres, absorbs few odors, which makes wool rugs suitable for high temperatures - even or especially for heavily sweating feet. This is due to the natural self-cleaning function of wool through its antibacterial properties. However, if a woolen rug should smell, a quick airing will remedy the situation, as absorbed odours are quickly released back into the air. Modern wool rugs rarely need to be cleaned, because fabrics made of wool hardly ever get dirty. The wool fibres naturally contain a lot of grease, which acts like a protective film against dirt. Each individual wool hair is coated with lanolin, the animal's own fat. The hairs bind to each other, preventing moisture from reaching the animal's skin. Despite the further processing of the wool, the fat layer remains intact, and the wool rug thus remains clean. Another advantage in case of emergency: Wool is hardly flammable, because the fibres do not burn, they only char.

Wool rugs in the living room as a feel-good factor

A wool rug immediately creates a natural and pleasant atmosphere in any room. Well chosen, it can lend a cosy atmosphere to one's own four walls. A particularly large woolen rug, for example, can give a minimalist room the necessary richness and warmth. A rather small room, on the other hand, can be given a lack of grandeur by round woolen rugs in beige. Due to their properties, wool rugs are suitable in the living room, but also in the sleeping area. Thanks to their high elasticity, which wool fibres have by nature, wool rugs in the living room and bedroom insare particularly convincing with their dimensional stability. The wool rug retains its original shape and even pressure marks caused by furniture disappear after some time.

Cleaning a woolen rug: How to make it last

To ensure that your wool rug lasts for a long time, you should clean and maintain it regularly. But how should you preferably clean a wool rug? It is best to vacuum it once a week with a smooth floor nozzle to prevent dirt and dust from settling and, for example, to prevent your wool rug in light colours from greying. Stains should be removed as soon as possible. Spilled liquids can be soaked up with a cloth and dabbed off. However, they should not be rubbed in, as this will change the structure of the fibres. Wool has exceptional absorbency, but because it absorbs moisture well, not too much water should be used when cleaning wool rugs. Heating air and regular airing help to dry the wool rug quickly. Dried-in stains can be carefully scraped off with a spatula or butter knife. For stubborn stains, you should have your wool rug professionally cleaned to prevent further damage. If you want to clean your rug yourself, you should only use cleaning agents that are also suitable for wool. It is best to use a Rug cleaner for wool rugs. Wool rugs can form lint at the beginning, regardless of whether the wool rug is high pile  or short pile - you should be aware of this if you want to buy your wool rug online. Linting is a quality feature of wool rugs and a natural process that occurs after a short time. Excess lint can simply be vacuumed off with a hoover on a gentle setting or carefully cut off with scissors. It also helps to beat out the wool rug occasionally. But be careful: Do not pull on the protruding threads or brush the wool rug. For more tips on cleaning wool rugs, see our FAQ below.

Cotton rug: A favourable alternative to wool rug?

Cotton, like wool, is a renewable and sustainable raw material that is biodegradable. Both fibres are soft and elastic. And there is another thing cotton and wool have in common: they are used in many different ways. The cotton rug can be made in different ways, whether knotting, weaving or tufting. Cotton is considered the basic material in the production of modern as well as classic rugs and offers a natural look, but cotton rugs are not as dirt-repellent as wool rugs made from animal fur.

How can I clean my wool rug?

If you want to prolong the life of your wool rug, you should do more than just vacuum it regularly. For this purpose, a bath in lukewarm or cold water with a wool detergent is a good idea. The water should not be too hot, the wool rug should be rinsed properly afterwards to remove residues, and it should never be dried hanging. To prevent your woolen rug from getting ripples, you should pull it straight every now and then while it is drying.

How can I remove red wine stains on the wool rug?

Red wine stains on the wool rug are a stubborn challenge, especially on bright wool rugs. It is important to treat the stain as soon as possible while it is still damp. Excess liquid can be soaked up with a kitchen roll or cotton cloth. Carbonated mineral water or white wine neutralise the tannins of the red wine. This prevents the red colour from settling. Remaining discolourations can be treated with acidic household remedies such as lemon juice and salt. Put some lemon juice on the stain, sprinkle salt on it, let it soak in and then rinse it with warm water and dab it off. You can clean your woolen rug in a similar way with vinegar or baking soda. Acidic household remedies are particularly suitable for bright woolen rugs, but should be used with care so as not to damage the woolen rug. To avoid spreading the stain, always blot.

How can I remove coffee stains on the wool rug?

Spilled coffee on a wool rug, like any colour-intensive liquid, requires quick action. To remove coffee stains on a woolen rug, a combination of sparkling water and washing-up liquid is suitable. As with red wine on a woolen rug, the same applies: dab instead of rub. If the coffee stain on the wool rug does dry, it can be treated with bile soap. To do this, carefully dab the soap onto the stain with enough water, let it soak in and rinse with water. You want to clean your wool rug with baking soda? Baking soda is a real miracle cure for rug cleaning that also works on coffee stains. Simply leave it to work for half an hour and vacuum the residue away. To be on the safe side, test the baking soda on an inconspicuous spot first.

Is a wool rug recommended for house dust allergies?

House dust allergy sufferers should do without a rug? This is not true, because wool rugs made of sheep's wool in particular keep the indoor air clean by binding the dust from the air in their fabric. The only important thing is to vacuum regularly - at least once a week. Smooth floors, on the other hand, throw a breeze of dust through the air with every draught. Ideally, allergy sufferers should choose an easy-care short pile rug made of wool or synthetic fibres, which, in contrast to the long fibres of the high pile rug, absorbs less dust.

Is a wool rug suitable for underfloor heating?

Due to their thermal conductivity, wool rugs are very suitable for underfloor heating. However, in order for the heat of your underfloor heating to penetrate through the rug, you should pay attention to a low pile height and pile density. Besides wool rugs, rugs made of natural fibres such as jute or sisal are particularly heat-permeable.

How can I protect my wool rug against moths?

Besides moth traps, soaps or scented sachets with lavender and cedar wood can protect your wool rug against moths. Other preventive measures include regular vacuuming and checking dark corners under furniture. This is especially true for parts of a woolen rug that are pushed under the couch, for example. If your rug is already infested, it should be vacuumed thoroughly from both sides. You can tell whether your woolen rug is infested by the larvae's feeding marks, among other things. Care should also be taken with rolled-up rugs that are stored - they offer ideal living conditions for moths.
